From Canvas to Wearable Art

For Alex Soldier, the story of a jewel may begin with a canvas.

In a recent commission for New York–based artist Oxana Uryasev, the master jeweler reimagined two of her paintings as bespoke brooches. The resulting creations bring canvas and precious metal into a poetic dialogue, where the language of painting finds new expression through Alex Soldier’s artistry and extraordinary craftsmanship in his New York City studio.

In his hands, painted lines become sculptural contours, color finds its echo in gemstones, and light travels across intricately worked metal. Each brooch consists of more than ten separate parts, meticulously crafted under a microscope and brought together into a miniature world of detail.

These extraordinary creations reveal the artistic possibilities of custom jewelry design in New York City, where personal inspiration becomes a one-of-a-kind work of wearable art.

Aphrodite: Poetry in Precious Metal

The original painting Aphrodite invites us to linger over a harmonious composition of graceful lines and intricate ornamentation. Alex Soldier carries that invitation beyond the canvas, reimagining the painted subject as a jewel whose beauty unfolds through gemstones, texture, and changing light.

Richly patterned metalwork draws the eye inward, while smoother surfaces offer moments of quiet contemplation. There is a rhythm to the composition: curves answer ornament, delicate forms echo one another, and every carefully considered element contributes to the harmony of the whole. The artistry reveals itself gradually, rewarding attention long after the first glance.

What once lived within the boundaries of a painting can now accompany its wearer—a cherished image given a new, tangible intimacy.

Beauty: Capturing the Soul of a Portrait

A woman’s expression holds a world of nuance—in the curve of her lip, the line of her brow, or the quiet suggestion of her gaze. Inspired by Oxana Uryasev’s original painting, the Beauty brooch presented an even greater artistic challenge. Alex Soldier sought to translate the portrait’s character and presence from the language of paint into the sculptural depth of a jewel, preserving the subtle emotion that gives the original work its soul.

Her sculptural profile emerges beneath a lavishly bejeweled headdress, where colorful gemstones mingle with the soft luster of pearls. Delicate openwork surrounds her like a precious frame. Light catches a facet, traces a graceful curve, and reveals another hidden detail. With each movement, the portrait seems to come alive, offering something new to discover.

Such delicacy demands extraordinary precision. Each individual element is painstakingly shaped and assembled by hand, with equal attention devoted to the expressive features of the face and the elaborate composition surrounding it. The finished brooch captures both the emotional depth of the original portrait and the richness of a miniature sculpture—a one-of-a-kind work of wearable art, handcrafted in New York City.
